Life in a remote Georgian Bay village when access was limited to water
transportation in summer, an ice road to Manitoulin in winter and float
planes as available. From its origins 200 years ago, Killarney attracted
an intermingling population of indigenous people and European
settlers. And what a life they built! The Killarney area was a hive of
commercial fishing, lumbering and tourist activity, with an active social
life. Memories of those times are recounted here by past and current
residents as fishing boomed and then declined, and established social
patterns were altered by direct access to Sudbury and southern Ontario
through the new Highway 637.
Margaret Derry is a historian who, following in the tradition over 125
years of her mother’s family, has loved Killarney each summer. This is
her fourth book on Killarney and northern Georgian Bay.
