Poplar Lane Farm has been breeding purebred cattle for nearly 20 years. After creating a good line of Murray Greys, with 15 years work, the entire herd was sold to Windmill Hill Farm in southern Texas. We were especially proud of our female Murray Greys, some of which represented four generations of our breeding. These cows produced good breeding bulls well as females.
We wanted a new challenge. After some consideration we settled on Shorthorns, and started to acquire foundation animals in 2001. Our cows were from various farms across Canada: namely Ontario, Quebec, Saskatchewan and Alberta. They came from good cow families, the Augustas and Broadhooks of Scotsdale, for example, and were sired by well-known bulls, such as CHS Royalty, MSF Equity, Shadybrook Royal Marc, and HS Rodeo Drive and CF Varsity. We have used various well recognized international bulls over the breeding seasons on our cows. WHR Sonny, Byland Turbo, Byland Gold Spear, CF Varsity, Buffalo High Ball, Dreamweaver, Glory-Jay McGamaliel, Ar Su Lu Kool and K Kim Gold count have sired calves here. For the 2006 breeding season we concentrated on K-Kim Gold Count and on a bull of our own breeding, PL Unforgiven. We TH test all our females and now use only TH free bulls. We used a variety of bulls in the 2007 season for 2008 calves.
